It has a smaller and more curvacious shape than the llama and in the front has a classic tuft of hair, but cannot be differentiated by its color as there are many tones. It can reach a height of 1.50 mts. (5ft) and can weigh as much as 64 kg. (140lbs) and some 7 kg. (15lbs) at birth. Its gestation period is 342 or 345 days and like the llama, the female alpaca can mate once it is 1 years old. It is common for the indigenous people of the highlands of Peru and Chile to help protect the existance of herds of alpacas.
