The capital of the La Libertad Department, it is located on the basin of the Moche river on the northern coast, and it is an area of great archaeological interest. Formerly territory of the Mochica, Lambeyeque and Chimú cultures, the valley of this river was annexed to the Inca Empire as part of the "Tawantinsuyo" (territory of the Incas and Quechuas).
The city was founded in 1534, quickly becoming one of the most important cities of the Viceroyship, then proclaiming its independence in 1820. Capital City of the "marinera" and "resbalosa" (typical dances), land of the Peruvian gait horses and beautiful beaches, Trujillo is the main economic and cultural center of northern Peru.
