National Sanctuary Ampay


Ampay Sanctuary
Located at the foothills of the Ampay mountain, with a surface of 356.5 hectares (855.6 acres), the sanctuary protects the last forests of "intipa" (Podocarpus oleifolius), a coniferous tree of Peru. It also protects some other endangered wild flora and fauna species: the andean bear, the dwarf deer and the cantuta flower.
Especially attractive are the closed basin lagoons Uspacocha and Ankascocha, the majestic mountain Amapay (5,252 meters above sea level), the waterfall Paccha, and the small lagoons of glacier origin.

How to get there
From Abancay to the Sanctuary take the Cuzco route until Arcopunco, 1.8 km from Abancay. From Arcopunco, keep going until the servorio de Sahuanay, go down until Ampay.
